CHALLENGE TO SCOTT’S RECORD
COLONEL FITZMAURICE’S PLANS United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 24. Leaving Lympne at 3 a.m. on Friday, Colonel Fitzmaurice who intends to fly the Bellanca ’plane, plans to reach Melbourne in 58 hours, including stopping for an hour at Baghdad, Allahabad, Singapore and Darwin, and only touching down wheels at Charleville. Colonel Fitzmaurice flew the Irish sweep ’plane the Bellanca from Croydon, and landed successfully at Portsmouth.
American officials gave him a certificate for a full load. Later the repreresentatives of the authorities concerned with Colonel Fitzmaurice’s test, advised that they had issued an incorrect report, due to an optimistic message. When the machine landed at Portsmouth the official test was not undertaken, owing to the absence of a weighing instrument, which Colonel Fitzmaurice hopes to secure this afternoon.
Colonel Fitzmaurice obtained the apparatus too late, and in view of this he will carry out the test to-morrow.
