Mr G. S. Carmichael, who has been on a visit to Sydney, returned to Timaru yesterday.

Mr L. B. Boulton-Ross (Sydney) is visitin" Timaru and is at the Grosvenor.

Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, visited Timaru yesterday. He returned north by the afternoon express.

The Rev. W. S. C. Stephens, vicar of Holy Trinity, Fitzroy. New Plymouth, has been appointed vicar of Waerangaahiki (eight miles from Gisborne), in the diocese of Waiapu. Visitors at the Dominion include: Messrs M. A. Tooley (Christchurch), J. Lewis, Ft. J. *uce, P. Gilfedder (Ashburton), L. J. Fechney (Westerfleld), D. Steward (Wellington), J. L. Morice, E. Stile (Dunedin).

Recent arrivals at the Empire include: Messr3 L. G. Hahn, M. R. Anderson, D. J. Hampton Reynolds, T. Bloor, J. Mcßride, P. E. Coleby (Christchurch), C. A. Parker (Mackenzie Country). In the terms examination for medical intermediate held a c . Otago University, G. B. Courtis, of Timaru, was successful in passing in the following subjects: Inorganic Chemistry, Physics, Biology. Organic Chemistry. A distinguished figure in Welsh football, Colonel T. W. Pearson, D. 5.0., D.L., arrived to by the Rangitiki at D.L., arrived by the Rangitiki at Auckland. He is accompanied by Mrs Pearson. They are making a first visit to New Zealand.

Guests at the Grosvenor include: Messrs A. E. Baxter. R. W. Morgan. T. Hawkes, L. Langveldt (Christchurch), F B. Smith. H. Walsham (Wellington), C. C. Hewitt (Palmerston North), J. T. Carswell. A. S. Froggatt (Invercargill), R. J. Waldie (Waimate). R. Moen (Dunedin).

Mr C. H. Tranter, general manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., Melbourne, who was granted leave of absence from duty several months ago. owing to il 1 -health, has resigned office, and Mr P. F. G. Gordon, who has acted as general manager during Mr Tranter’s absence, has been appointed to the vacancy. Warm tributes to the secretary of the Wellington Hospital Board. Mr R. Brown, who is resigning owing to illhealth after nearly 25 years’ service, were paid at a meeting of the board last night. The board granted Mr Brown nine months’ leave of absence on full pay. He will relinguish his duties on November 1. Mr J. B. Cook, accountant to the board, was appointed acting-secretary. General Sir Andrew Godley has been occupied with a round of semi-official engagements since his arrival in Auckland from England. He was present at a meeting of the Legion of Frontiermen on Wednesday. Yesterday morning he visited the Auckland war memorial museum with Lady Godley. and was conducted through the building by Maior-General Sir George Richardson and the director, Mr Gilbert Archey. Mr Holger Rosenberg, author, editor, and correspondent to the “Illustreret Fanilie-Joumal,” the largest illustrated weekly paper published in Scandinavia. is visiting New Zealand. He spent some time in Fiji and arrived at Port Chalmers this week by the motor ship Waiwera. having joined the vessel at Suva. Mr Rosenberg is writing a series of articles dealing with the South Sea Islands, and will also cover the Dominion. He intends to leave in a few weeks’ time for Tahiti. A tribute to Mr C. S. Hammond for the energetic manner in which he had entered into the work of the Timaru Central Relief Society during his short association with it was paid by members at a meeting of the Management Committee last night. The chairman (Mr J. W. Fair) and Mr R. W. Simpson expressed appreciation of Mr Hammond’s work and wished him every

r -icess in his new sphere in Christchurch. Mr Hammond, in acknowledging the remarks, wished the committee success and said that he hoped that any decision it might arrive at in regard to the administration of relief would be the ri'rht one.
