DESIRE FOR ENACTMENT By Telegraph—Press AssoclatliD WELLINGTON, Octobei 25. The Industries and Commerce Committee recommended to the Home today that the Cinematograph Films Bill be allowed to proceed with an amendment which the Committee thorght would strengthen the provision iontained In the Bill to prevent un'air trading. The Committee expressed ,he opinion that the Bill should be pasied into law during the present session. Mr A. Harris, chairman of the Conmittee, said that members of the Receis Committee which investigated the mo. tion picture industry must be gratifiei by the reception the provisions of the Bill had received in other parts of the world.
Mr M. J. Savage, Leader of the ) Opposition, welcomed the Bill, which, j he said, would benefit not only picture j theatre proprietors but people who at- j tended pictures generally. He assured ) the Prime Minister that the passing j of the Bill .would take only a few min- I utes, so its passing could not be de- j layed because of lack of time. Mr A. E. Jull (C., Waipawa) said he hoped that some power would be taken under the Bill to prevent the wholesale | building of theatres. Mr H. Atmore (Ind., Nelson) con- j tended that the people should have some say in the price they had to pay j for admission to theatres. They should ] not be dictated to by American and j foreign picture syndicates. Mr Harris, in reply, said that clause 13 of the Bill gave the powers Mr Jull decired. During recent years many ; theatres had been built which had no chance, economically, of carrying on. The report was tabled. k
