ATHLETICS

CELTIC CLUB FORMED A meeting was held in St. Patrick’s Hall on Wednesday night, to form a Celtic branch of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. Brother Marcellin presided and expressed pleasure at seeing such a large number of young men present. During the meeting, Rev. Father Murphy said how pleased he was to see such a fine type of young man present, many of whom he was sure, would turn out to be first class athletes. He stated that the school ground and St. Patrick’s Hall were at their disposal for training purposes. They also had adjoining Anzac Square, and he hoped the boys would commence immediately and get ready to make a good showing for their branch at all sports meetings to be held by the S.C.A.A. Club. Mr A. D. Mcßae also expressed pleasure at the enthusiasm displayed. He spoke of the very many pleasant times he had while an amateur at Victoria College, and expressed himself as beingonly too pleased to compete again in fields events as a member of the branch. In addition, he handed over a substantial donation towards the funds. Officers Elected. The following officials were appointed: Patron, Rev. Father Murphy; president, Rev. Brother Marcellin; vicepresidents, Rev. Father Barclay, Messrs J. Vuletta, M. H. Richards, J. Shea, L. Collins, A. D. Mcßae, W. Hall, C. Hall, J. Gilmore, P. Cronin, D. Cronin, F. Doyle, Con. Sullivan, J. Flood, J. Richardson, M. Mullins and L. McAteer; committee, Messrs J. De Lury. F. O’Connell, Goddard and J. G. Shea; secretary and treasurer, Mr P. Kyne; coaches, Brother Marcellin and Mr Cole.

It was decided to hold the first training night on Tuesday, at 6.30 p.m. Fourteen of the members present expressed themselves as being willing to compete at the S.C.A.A. Club’s evening meeting to be held on November 3. Brother Marcellin stated that in regard to the proposed amateur bicycle road race to be held by the S.C.A.A.A., he was pleased to say that 24 members of the branch were willing to compete.
