ORARI At the monthly meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute a letter from Trumpington was read by Mrs Worner. Two new members, Misses Flower and Thomas, were welcomed. It being members’ day the president Mrs Macdonald then called upon Miss Barker to take the chair. In recognition of their work, the president, vice-president (Mrs Gerard) and the secretary (Mrs Brenton) were presented with bouquets. Songs were given by Miss G. Hughes, and the Orari Choir, Miss May Killok acting as accompanist. Mrs F. Priddle played a pianoforte solo. Mr Muff gave a very interesting talk on the Orari Cheese Factory, and was presented with a large buttonhole in recognition. Competitions resulted as follows: Best flower in garden, Mrs W. A most instructive and practical talk on “Gardening,” given by Mr C. E. Shallcrass of Timaru, was followed with keen interest by all present. Mrs Galwey proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker. Owing to her departure to Four Peaks Mrs Keown sent in her resignation as a member of the committee which was received with regret. Mrs A. P. Bray was co-opted in her stead.

Mention was made of Miss Blandford’s informal lecture on elocution and voice production in Fairlie in November, also of a group meeting in February to meet the president and executive of the South Canterbury Federation. It is proposed to hold a Mackenzie Women’s Institute Group Drama Festival in March. Both competitions drew large entries and were judged by Mrs Ross and Mr Shallcrass. The results were:—(a) Plate of shortbread, Mrs B. S. Robertson 1, Mrs S. P. Bray 2. Later all entries were given to the Women’s Institute Depot in Timaru. (b) Jam jar of spring flowers arranged for effect, Mrs A. B. Mackenzie 1, Mrs G. Gallagher 2. Mrs J. Gibson was the accompanist for the afternoon.
