OVER THE FENCES
FINE JUMPING So far as the events for hunters were concerned, there was more to interest the public this year than was the case 12 months ago, this being due to the resuscitation of the competition for the Rhodes Hunt Challenge Cup. The last time the cup was competed for was in 1932, there being no entries last year. The competition is for teams of three horses qualified with and owned by members of any one Hunt affiliated to the New Zealand Hunts’ Association during the 1934 season. There were four entries yesterday, the horses being ridden by a member of the Hunt or Hunt’s servant. They were awarded points for jumping, soundness and type, the cup going to the South Canterbury Hunt No. 1 team (Miss B. Harper’s Captain Murphy, Eric Jackson’s Brisk and the Misses S. and J. Orbell’s Gambler). Other competitors were South Canterbury No. 2, Waimate Hunt and Christchurch Hunt.
There were 18 competitors in the ladies’ hunters class, which was won by the Misses S. and J. Orbell’s Gambler. Last year’s winner. Erie Jackson's Brisk, was third yesterday. Second prize went to another well known performer in Mr R. J. Waldie's Bandana. In the class for hunter, any weight. Bandana came out on top, Miss Betty Harper’s Challenger being second and Mrs J. H. Grigg’s Haldon third. Haldon subsequently won Mrs R. H. Rhodes’s challenge cup for hunter chosen for type and soundness, while Bandana was adjudged champion hunter. The reserve champion was Captain Murphy. The winners were congratulated by the president, and the cups were presented by Mrs Woodhouse.
