SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C.

CARD FOR TO-DAY Not for many years have overnight prospects for a South Canterbury spring meeting appeared brighter than is the case at present. The acceptances constitute nearly a record for a one-day fixture at Washdyke, and the fields are strong in class as well as numerically. Evidence of this is seen in the Teschemaker Handicap, 12 of the 13 acceptors claiming an engagement in the New Zealand Cup; and the Flying Handicap field being mainly composed of Stewards’ Handicap candidates. Speed and stamina are represented in the secondary events, while the big contingents in the two trots include several Derby aspirants. Proceedings will open with the hurdle race at 12.30, and a convenient train service has been arranged from all parts of Canterbury. Specials will leave Timaru for the course at 11.7, 11.33, 12.7 and 12.40, and will pick up passengers at the north end of the Bay and at Smithfield.

Speculators are likely to devote most attention in the hurdle race to the top-weights, Gold Knight and Lycida.s, and a soundly-run race may result in a victory for Lycidas. In a muddling contest the odds would be In favour of Gold Knight.

Barrier positions will be important factors in the Spring Stakes, in which twenty-three remain. First View is the only one with a win to his credit, but many have good “placed" form, and with reasonable luck in the draw, Secret Paper, Coat of Arms and Honeste should run well.

Shandon Chimes, Subsidy, Gamble, Adsum and Noble Prince make strong Eippeal in the Washdyke Trot, and the placings may include Shandon Chimes, Subsidy and Adsum.

Of the baker’s doezn in the Teschemaker Handicap, Polydora, Cough and Locksley may be backward, and Water Power may be reserved for tire Flying. Sweet Agnes, Red Racer and Polydora appear to be three likely to assist backers in unravelling a knotty problem, though if Polydora was ready she would be preferred to any of them.

Top Rank, Rebel Chief .and Unseen have recent winning form to recommend them for the Tycho Handicap, and Elbanor and Cheap Money are speedy gallopers. Rebel Chief, Top Rank and Elbanor may claim the notice of the judge. The three-year-olds Donalda, Boltaire and Subsidy car. be expected to play leading roles in the final act of the Hadlow Trot, but they may find it difficult to hold off Guy Mauritius, who will be suited by the distance. Another very open race is the Kerrytown Handicap, a mile race for hacks. Recent form may give the best line on the probable result, and this seems to favour Hunting Go, Colossian and Weatherley. Palermo will probably retire from the Flying Handicap in favour of Red Boa. Silvox and Gold Paper will perhaps be short of a race, but backers will still be in a quandary. The pony Knockfin will probably be favourite if she draws a good position, and if she avoids trouble at the start she may lead Cranford and Red Boa under the wire.
