Everything fascinating A popular and public lecture, entitled “Intimate Sidelights on American Life,” will be given in Chalmers Hall to-night by the Rev. Llywelyn Williams. Mr W. D. Campbell will occupy the chair and the address will commence at 7.30 o’clock. The Scottish Society’s monthly concert and dance will be held in the Scottish Hall to-night at 8 o’clock. A high-class programme has been secured. To-day, at 152 North Street, Morton and Co. will sell at Mr H. Valentine’s residence, his household furniture and effects. Everything is in good order and the sale will be held wet or fine. Advice was received at a meeting of the South Auckland Bowling Centre this week that as a result of the disappointing measure of support forthcoming, no Dominion team could be sent to the Centenary bowling tourney. When a decision was made to remove the Wellington Town Hall tower on the score of earthquake risk, Mr John Hunter, who built the Town Hall 30 years ago, commented: “It is a shame to pull down that tower. I built it, and I say that by the time that tower is shaken down the whole of Wellington will be in ruins.” Those engaged in the work of demolition are now inclined to agree with Mr Hunter. The work has been in progress a month, and during the last week the contractors have been using gelignite. Gangs have started work in forests in the Lismore district (New South Wales) to fill contracts for the supply of sleepers to New Zealand and China. This is the first large-scale sleeper-cut-ting work in the thousands of acres of forest which surround the Listnore district. The last order from New Zealand was for 50,000 sleepers, and the order for sleepers for China is almost unlimited. Before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, T. O. Finnerty was ordered to pay Nairns, Ltd., £2/12/- on or before October 25, in default three days’ imprisonment. To-morrow evening a dance in aid of the prize funds for the Southburn School will be held in Mr W. Bell’s granary. Arrangements are complete, and favoured with good weather the function should be a great success. Elm wood has, up till now, been regarded as of little use because of its tendency to warp.
