TEMUKA
NEW DAIRY FACTORY 1 WORK WELL FORWARD Good progress is being made with the building of the factory for the new Temuka Dairy Company, and it is expected that it will be opened for milk supply on November 1. Standing on an acre of land about a mile and a half from the town on the Factory Road, the building is being erected in brick and will embody the latest methods in dairy factory construction. An adequate water supply is assured, and the problem of drainage has been overcome. Almost ninetenths of the present local supply is assured the company. The output will consist entirely of cheese. RIVER EROSION Protective work on the banks of the Temuka river where erosion took place during the last flood near the main traffic bridge is being carried out by the Geraldine County Council. Where the stream swept across into the southern bank on the downstream side of the bridge, willow stumps carrying extensive roots have been hauled into place along the newly exposed face and wired back to the willows growing a short distance from the water on top of the bank. Since that work was done Jfaori unemployed have been engaged in shovelling the shingle off a projecting spit from the opposite bank to facilitate the next flood cutting a new channel and not being deflected into the south bank. Other protective work has been carried out on Mr G. McCullough’s frontage, higher up the river, and near the new traffic bridge at Kakahu. REFRESHER CLASSES A two-day refresher course for teachers of Temuka and surrounding districts opened in the Temuka District High School buildings yesterday. Lectures on drawing and singing were given by Messrs Masterton and Jenner, of the Education Department. Today’s instruction will include brushwork. PERSONAL Mr S. Cooper left Temuka yesterday on a visit to Napier. They attribute the poor run to the fact that the Opihi has a very long mouth through the bar at present. In the report of the Temuka Golf Club’s closing day, in yesterday's paper, it was stated that Mrs J. T. Smart had presented the trophies. Mrs C. L. Fraser, the wife of the pn.sident, undertook the presentation. The number of unemployed for whom work has been found by the Temuka Unemployment Committee this week is much the same as that of recent weeks, a total of 241 being listed for work.
