SUNDAY CONCERT
LARGE AUDIENCE AT THEATRE ROYAL
One of the most successful Sunday night entertainments held in Timaru for some time was enjoyed by a large audience at the Theatre Royal last night, when the Timaru Municipal Junior Band, assisted by the Campbell brothers and local artists, provided a first class programme.
Messrs Colin and John Campbell, who have on several occasions visited Timaru during tours of the Dominion, delighted the gathering with their concertinas, and showed that they had lost none of the art which ranked them as headliners when vaudeville had a firm hold on public appreciation. They opened their numbers with an operatic medley followed by selections on ocarinas and miniature concertinas. An imitation of a church bell and organ was a particularly fine piece of work, and the brothers had to respond to numerous encores, with the audience still demanding more.
The playing of the band, under the baton of Lieut. W. H. Osborne, delighted the gathering, the general opinion being that the combination will give a good account of itself at the forthcoming contest at Geraldine. Of particular Interest was the own selection march, “King of the Air,” and the test selection “Carmen No. 2,” contest pieces which the band handled skilfully. Other numbers were: Hymn, “Sandon”; valse, “Amorette,” and march, "Newcastle.” The vocal soloists were Mrs H. B. Naylor, who sang “Break Break” and “Reaping,” and Mr C. Whitehouse, whose numbers were “Roses for You” and “Julia’s Garden.” Mr R. R. Wills was heard In elocutionary numbers, including “Not Understood” and “Poodle and Pug.” The accompaniments were played by Mrs A. Wheeler and Miss L. Smith.
