The referees and judges to officiate at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships at Hastings next week, were appointed at a meeting of the Boxing Council last night. The referees will be Messrs J. D. Donovan (Hastings) and J. Kilmartin (Otago), and the judges will be Messrs G. Bush (Auckland), T. A. Heath (Napier), and Messrs A. J. McCartney and A. Fyffe (Southland). For the test match between the Australian and New Zealand amateurs at Invercargill. Mr A. Tall will be referee, and Mr N. McLean will officiate at Auckland, and a Wellington referee will act in the Australians’ contest at Wellington. The Council, in the course of other business last night, declared the New Zealand professional light-weight title vacant, owing to the holder, J. Franklyn, having contravened the rules by demanding a set sum for a championship contest, win, lose or draw. The C. Ravner v. A. Hughes bout at Blenheim, next Saturday, will be for the light-weight title. RAYNER BEATS COSTA By Telegraph— Press Association DUNEDIN, September 16. There was a fair attendance at the town hall last night when Clarrie Rayner 8.133 (New Zealand) beat Dal Costa B.IOJ (Australia) on points in a 10 round contest. The boxers gave a fine display of fast open fighting, making the pace hot, but although the Australian was game he could not overcome the extra weight and superior strength of the New Zealander. Rayner built up a good lead in the earlier rounds, but towards the end Costa scored points with lefts to the jaw, but his blows lacked sting.
