TEMUKA

THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ANNUAL MEETING The annual congregational meeting of the Temuka Presbyterian Church was held in the Sunday School Hall on Wednesday evening. Before proceeding to business the Rev. C. A. Kennedy, who presided, moved that the Session Clerk be in- 1 structed to send letters of sympathy to Messrs D. Taylor and J. L. White and their families. The motion was carried. The report of the Board of Managers stated that considering - the economic stress the financial position had been well maintained. In place of the usual fair or sale it had been decided to have a freewill offering, and it was pleasing to report that this had resulted in the sum of £142 being collected. The P.W.M.U. had made their usual house to house canvass for the missions and this had returned £3l/18 6. While the very creditable sum of £IOO had been given to the budget, the church’s quota was really £145. The new manse had been completed toward the end of last- year. Thanks were due the special committee w’hich had superintended the work, and especially Mr A. J. Davey. For the last few months voluntary workers had been levelling the grounds of the manse and erecting a garage. During the last eight months three of the managers. Messrs A. J. Botting. J. A. Paterson and A. Leslie, had left the district, and Mr White had suffered continued illness. The faithful service of, the caretaker (Mr W. Goodman) acknowledged, and Mr Kennedy was thanked for his patient guidance and help through a difficult year. On the motion of Mr G. A. Davey the report was adopted. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a credit of £l2/10/4 and there was a surplus of £6,474/13/7 in the statement of assets and liabilities. Contingent liabilities totalled £4OO and the Bible Class Hall account showed a debit of £203/11/-.

Before moving the adoption of the balance-sheet, Mr G. H. Watson, the treasurer, said that this was much the same as that of last year. The church buildings would soon need attention. It was about eight years since any repairs were made, and those required now would cost about £4O. The motion was seconded and carried.

On behalf of the session, Mr A. Shaw said that the changeable weather and amount of sickness had militated against attendances at church. Last year reference had been made to the small number of people who attended the morning prayer meeting. The number was still small and it was hoped that more w'ould make a special effort to attend. Seven new members had been admitted to the church, bringing the roll number up to 184. Reports were received from the Bible classes, Sunday schools (Temuka, Milford and Seadown). Young Worshippers League, Girls’ Club, choir, P.W.M.U., Maori Mission and tennis and croquet club, each showing a successful years’ working.

Commenting on the reports, Mr Kennedy said that on the whole they were favourable and creditable. One or two things in the year had been a pleasure to him. A departui’e from sales and fairs as a means of raising finance was one. The church was behind in its quota to the budget funds. If sufficient money had been collected there would have been no necessity for a canvass by the P.W.M.U. The attendance at church had been well maintanied and on the, whole the evening attendance showed an increase. Too many people were content to sit at home and listen to sermons by radio. By so doing they were not contributing to the work of Christ and were not setting a good example. The Board of Managers elected was: Messes J. Boyd, G. Smith, A. Brown, J. Brown, G. A. Davey. W. McFarlane, J. Murray, D. McDonald and J. Archibald. Votes of thanks were passed to the auditor (Mr C. L. Fraser), the retiring managers, the chairman and the local newspapers. FOOTBALLERS BALL Constituting one of the successes of the year socially, the annual ball of the Temuka Football Club was held in the Drill Hall on Wednesday evening.
