OBITUARY
SIR JOHN ROBERTS By Telegrapn—Press Association DUNEDIN. September 13. The death occurred this evening, after a brief illness, of Sir John Roberts, in his 89th year. He was bom at Selkirk, Scotland, on October 30. 1845, and went to Australia in 1864 to study station management and the wool business. He came to Dunedin in 1868, when the well-known firm of Murray, Roberts and Co. was established in this city. Sir John was prominently identified with the progress of the city and province. He was elected Mayor unopposed in 1889, and in 1891 had the honour of C.M.G. conferred on him. In 1920, the additional honour of knighthood was conferred on him. Sir John was a director of the Union Steam Ship Co., the Mosgiel Woollen Company and the Trustees Executors and Agency Company.
