Conclusion of Trial. In a Court guarded by troops armed with machine guns and fixed bayonets, Ludwig Maitzen, Erich Wohlrab, Franz Leeb and Josef Hackl, four policemen, were sentenced to death for participation in the seizure of the Chancellery. Execution was to follow within three hours unless the President acceded to a request for clemency. Emil Schrott, a police inspector, and another constable were sentenced to life imprisonment, twm others to 20 years and one to 15 years penal servitude. The trial lasted six days. The defence pleaded that the accused were unaware that they were participating in a revolt. Two hundred and sixty Viennese police were arrested following the discovery of the list of members of the Nazi party during the search of a policeman’s house. SHOOTING SHOCKS VIENNA.
