STRICKLAND KNOCKS OUT SINGLETON By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, August 1. A heavyweight boxing contest between Maurice Strickland (12st 71b), of Wellington, and George Singleton (13st 51b), of Invercargill, was staged here this evening, Singleton being knocked out in the fourth round. Strickland dropped Singleton for a count of nine in the first round. Apart from the two blows that knocked him down, Singleton outboxed Strickland, but was unable to stand up to the latter’s right. As a result of this contest, Strickland has been selected to meet Ambrose Palmer here on August 18. In a preliminary bout, W. Pascoe (12st 121 b), of Invercargill, defeated M. Frank Bachman, announced that Jim Donald, of Sydney, had wirelessed an offer of a championship match with Ambrose Palmer at Melbourne in October. Bachman replied that he would accept if guaranteed 25,000 dollars, in addition to expenses.
