THE TARIFF
FURTHER REPRESENTATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, August 1. Three items in the tariff schedule, covering rubber footwear, were the subject of a deputation representative of importers of goods of that kind from British countries, which waited on the Minister o’. Customs, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, with suggested amendments, which they said would retain the preference for British manufacturers better than the existing method. They preposed that a specific duty of a certain amount per pair of shoes should be imposed in place of an ad valorum duty, which loses its effect on the goods of very low value in the country of their manufacture. A reduction of the duty from 27J per cent, to 25 per cent, on men’s and boys’ clothing imported from the United Kingdom was the subject of a deputation from clothing manufacturers. It was claimed that with a 25 per cent, duty the United Kingdom producer more than fully maintained his position, and the increased imports of ready-msde clothing must react against employment in New Zealand.
