LOST TRAIL.
TRACTORS RETURNING TO BASE. FAILURE TO RELIEVE REARADMIRAL BYRD. By Kadio—Special to Press Association— Prom the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (Received July 24, 7. p.m.) LITTLE AMERICA, July 23. The tractor party was unable to find the trail to the Bolling Advance Base, and is returning to headquarters.
A recent message from Little America reported that weather permitting, a tractor with a crew of five would leave for the Bolling Advance Weather Base to relieve Rear-Admiral Byrd, after his four months of isolation. Two meteor observers, Mr Carl Peterson, the veteran Antarctic explorer, and Mr Bernard Fleming, of New Zealand, will occupy the hut until October. Admiral Byrd was to return with the tractor. He was reported to be suffering from an injured arm, but he had not indicated whether it was serious. A later message reported that a tractor left at 2.20 on Friday afternoon for the Bolling Advance Base, and by 1.30 on Sunday morning had made its way to the Fifty-Mile depot, but was no longer able to pick up the flag-marked trail leading southward, as many of the markers were covered with snow.
