One hundred and eight bombing planes flew towards the capital, a similar number defending. The fighters, aided by searchlights, anti-aircraft batteries, and the Civilian Observers’ Corps, sought, to waylay and destroy the defenders. The raiders’ chief objectives included the Air Ministry and the “seat of the Government in the Northland.” Official Version. A communique stated: “Bomber formations were picked up and reported by the Observer Corps, upon which eight fighter squadrons were despatched to intercept them. The raiders bombed seven targets.”
