SOUTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION MEETING OF EXECUTIVE Mr A. W. Stead presided over a fair attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Hockey Association, The North Otago Men's Hockey Association wrote advising that the suggested date, September 8, of the annual representative fixture with South Canterbury, was not suitable as it clashed with the Test, New Zealand v. Australia, at Dunedin, on that date, and it was suggested that the match should be played on September 22. The North Otago Women’s Hockey Association also wrote, stating that, in order to facilitate transport, it would be agreeable to play the South Canterbury team at the same date of the men’s match. The secretary was instructed to advise the North Otago Associations that the date forwarded would be acceptable for both matches. The Geraldine County Hockey SubAssociation was granted permission to play Mid-Canterbury at Ashburton, on August 4, and to hold its annual tourney on August 23. Nominations of players for the New Zealand team for the Test match at Dunedin on September 8 close on August 13. This matter was left in the hands of the selector. Travelling Expenses. Commenting upon the representative match at Ashburton last Saturday. the chairman said that the trip had resulted in a small loss financially. If a player were selected to participate in an outside representative match and travelled to that place by car, and was not prepared to fulfil his obligations by contributing toward the expenses of a bus, then he should stand down and allow someone else to fill his position. The Association was in financial straits, and all players should be willing to stand by the Association and back it up. In future the matter would be watched carefully, he said. Mr D. Unwin said that it did not matter how players travelled so long as they paid their share. Apparently the trouble was that buse# left too late for some players. He objected to arriving home at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning. The secretary, Mr W. Gow, said that much of the difficulty could be obviated if the committee were advised in good time so that any vacant seats in the bus could be filled by supporters and non-players. It was moved by Mr V. Hahn that “All players selected to represent South Canterbury be held individually responsible for all expenses incurred.” The motion was carried unanimously. The secretary reported that letters of appreciation had been sent the Mid-Canterbury Association and it was decided to place on record the appreciation of the committee of the excellent treatment and courtesy extended to the players upon the recent visit to Ashburton. One of the members of the Management Committee agreed temporarily to undertake the duties of assistant secretary. Arrangements for the billeting and entertainment of players of the Canterbury team were discussed and upon the suggestion of Mr A. Annear that each player should contribute I/- and that a collection should be taken up on the ground toward expenses. Arrangements in connection with a motor tour on the Sunday after the match were left in the hands of the assistant secretary. The entertainment of the Mackenzie women’s team was referred to the Women’s Clubs. The assistant secretary was instructed to inquire into the possibility of a dance on the Bay on the evening of the match. It was decided that a special meeting of the Emergency Committee should be held on July 30 to finalise arrangements for the visit of the Canterbury team. Fares for -he Geraldine and Temuka matches on Thursday, July 26 were fixed at 3/6 and 2/6 respectively for men and women. Mr Hughes w'as appointed manager of the men’s representative team, and Mr Gow manager of the women’s team. Mr Skudder drew attention to the actions of children in swinging on. and playing soccer with the nets on Russell Square, as a result of which the cross-bar of one was now broken. The secretary was Instructed to look for a suitable storing place for the nets while not in use. Visit of Australians.
