SAILING CLUB FORMED

DECISION OF LARGE MEETING HARBOUR BOARD TO BE APPROACHED More than 30 enthusiasts attended a meeting in Timaru last night at which it was decided to form a sailing and power boat club, which would alsp include model classes. Mr S. ,H. Bird, who convened the meeting, was elected to the chair. Mr Eird expressed gratification at the large attendance, and said it had been suggested that should a club be formed it could be divided into two sections —models and larger class. For the last four or five years Timaru had had rather a bad name so far as sailing was concerned on account of the weather, and the fact that some of those who had been actively interested had not been looked at with too kindly an eye by the Timaru Harbour Board. Whenever any race was undertaken by the new club, however, three motor launches would be available in case of capsize, and this should assure a good measure of safety. The activities of members would, however, be subject to restrictions by the Harbour Board, but he understood that about 350 to 400 acres of water would possibly be made available. This should be satisfactory, especially when it was recognised that other clubs, which operated successfully, had much less water. A large percentage of the gathering signified its intention of purchasing or co-operating in the purchase of boats, and it was unanimously decided on the motion of the chairman, that a club to be known as the South Canterbury Sailing and Power Boat Club, be formed. It was stated that there was a possibility of the club starting off with seven sailing and four power boats. During a discussion yachts of the Wakatere and Takapuna classes were freely mentioned as being most suitable. The chairman and Messrs C. Hanson, D. W. Riddler, A. E. Wrtkins, W. E Clark, H. J. Washer and B. Olliver, were appointed a provisional committee to make further inquiries and report to a general meeting. It was explained that the committee would be obliged to approach the Harbour Board with a view to its cooperation, and to arrange internal matters in connection with the club.
