Scene: First-class “smoker,” Christ-church-Dunedin express. Languid new chum in plus-fours chatting with creditable, I’m shaw. But don’t tell old identity. “Oh, yaas. Your New Zealand made things are—er—quite me they’ll compare with the imported, because it’s all rot. It’s all a question of values, dontchewknow.” “Well,” said the 0.1., “we’ll agree to differ. Have a smoke?” (passing his pouch). Presently Plus Fours began again. “What did I tell you?” he cried triumphantly, “take this tobacco of yours—choice American—and no more like New Zealand than hop-beer’s like Bass.” The 0.1. laughed. “That tobacco, sir,” he said, “is Cut Plug No. 10—New Zealand grown and manufactured. Every tobacconist sells it. But I’m not surprised you thought it was choice American.” Plus Fours shut up. Cut Plug No. 10, all smokers know, is one of the five famous toasted brands, the others being: Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. They’re in everybody’s pipe, and not only equal to finest imported but considerably cheaper. And they can’t harm even the inveterate smoker—they’re toasted.
