Many lives were lost and thousands are homeless as the result of widespread floods in Eastern Bengal and Assam, due to several days’ incessant torrential rain. Railway lines and bridges were destroyed and agricultural land inundated. The downpour in the Himalayan foothills, of unprecedented severity, is taking heavy toll of jungle life. Carcases of elephants, tigers and leopards were observed in the Bramaputra River.
