HOSPITAL BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital Board was held yesterday. Present—Mr E. Macdonald (chairman), Mrs I. Hewson, Messrs G. Dash, J. Dempsey, J. T. Hay, H. J. Clark, J. Kennedy, B. R. Macdonald, G. D. Selbie, G. Saunders, R. W. Simpson and Dr. C. A. Paterson. Letters of Appreciation. A letter was received from Mr E. Mayne, thanking the Board for assistance granted to him. Mr M. Rennie, formerly gardener at the Hospital, wrote thanking the Board for granting him leave on retirement. Palmerston North Unemployed. A letter was received from the Mayor of Palmerston North conveying a resolution passed at a public meeting protesting against the action of the Unemployment Board in paying reduced sustenance in place of employment at old rates, and asking that the Board pass a similar resolution. The secretary (Mr H. G. Naylor) gave details of the payments made in Palmerston North, as compared with Timaru, and the Board decided to "receive" the Palmerston letter. Old People’s Home. The Master of the Old People’s Home (Mr E. Laverty) reported that admissions during the month totalled 39 and discharges 42, leaving 47 in the institution at the beginning of the present month. The general health of the inmates had been fair. The Salvation Army Band paid their bi-monthly visit. Mr W. J. Rogers put on a gramophone concert and the boys from the Marist School gave an evening’s entertainment with a supper supplied by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. These visits were much appreciated by the old folk. Thanks were also due to the following for gifts in kind: Mrs Barker (Winchester), Miss Pilbrow, fruit; E. Adams, Ltd. cakes; Mr Heslop, rabbits and books; Mr Clissold, clothing; Mrs Cummings, books; Mr Lunan, magazines; Salvation Army, “War Cry”; St. Mary’s Review, ‘‘Timaru Herald and “Timaru Post.” The report was adopted. Social Service. The Social Service Committee reported as follows, the figures in parentheses being for the. corresponding period of last year: Seven (10) new applications for assistance were received and granted at a cost of £6/2/6 (£9/16/11). One of these was likely to become permanent. Further temporary assistance was granted in 31 (32) cases at a total cost of £Bl/1/4 (£56/5/2). Relief granted by the Waimate Hospital Committee during the past month amounted to £37 18/10. The report was adopted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported as follows; Fees charged to naval ratings.—ln the past the fees charged to naval ratings for hospital treatment were 30'a week. In view of the increases which had taken place In all hospital fees, the question of increasing the fees to the above class of patients was taken up with the Director-General of Health, who suggested that it be referred to the Hospital Boards’ Association for consideration. The committee recommended accordingly. Waitaki Hospital Board. —In regard to patients from the Waitaki Hospital Board district, who visited Timaru for the purpose 'of seeking specialist treatment in the Timaru Hospital, the committee recommended that, in future, before such cases were admitted that the Medical Superintendent notify the secretary in order that the Waitaki Hospital Board’s sanction to treatment might be obtained. Estimates 1934-35.—Advice had been received from the Director-General of Health that the Hon. Minister of Health had approved the Board’s estimates. Kurow Hospital.—An account for £79 18/9 being l-6th of the deficiency of the cost of working the Kurow Maternity Hospital for 1933-34 had been received from the Waitaki Hospital Board. Recommendation—That the account be paid, The report was adopted.
