FREIGHT RATES ON STOCK
REDUCTION DESIRED. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. May 23. Criticism of the freight rates charged on stock by the New Zealand railways was made by Mr David Jones, chairman of the Meat Producers Board, at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mr Jones said that although farmers were now consigning by rail more than double the amount of stock they were consigning before the war, rates charged were still 505 per cent, above prewar rates. Mr Jones was promised the support of the Union in an agitation to have freights reduced, and to refer the matter to the Railways Board and to the Dominion Conference of the Farmers’ Union.
