MYSTERY SOLVED
SAFE-BLOWER SENTENCED. By x'eleg: aph—Press Association NELSON, May 23. One of the cases of safe-blowing, which caused alarm in Nelson in July last, was cleared up in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when Patrick Terence Burke, aged 39, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering Howcroft's grocery shop and stealing £lO/1/6 in money, and tobacco and cigarettes valued at 2/-. Detective Sinclair said that a suitcase which was found at the Waterlea footbridge, Blenheim, contained plasticine and explosives, and it was later forwarded to Nelson. He found that the plasticine corresponded to that used on Howcroft’s safe. Chisel marks on the window corresponded with the chisel in the suitcase. The trousers in the case had the name Burke written on the pocket. Burke was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for being in possession of explosives, and was committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence on the major charge.
