CAROLINE BAY
PROFIT OF £396 ON CARNIVAL ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL REPORT Several important improvements have been made on Caroline Bay, according to the annual report of the Caroline Bay Association, which states that, as was arranged with the Borough Council, the profits of 1932-33 carnival were devoted to improvement work on the Bay, and a number of necessary improvements had been effected. All the fencing on the terraces was painted, ten chains of new fencing erected, the area to the north of the piazza was levelled and sown in grass, new steps from the top of the piazza to the lower terrace were put in, and other similar improvements had been completed, all this work materially adding to the appearance of the Bay and its approaches. The report continues: After careful consideration and many conferences with the Council and Association’s representatives, it was decided that the profits from this year’s carnival were, together with accumulated interest from the Rhodes Bequest, to be devoted to enlarging the supper room of the Bay Hall. Weather conditions were the worst yet experienced by the Association during any carnival. Even with this handicap, the .financial result was entirely satisfactory, the nett profit after providing substantial donations to the Band funds, amounted to £390 13s Id, as against £265 4s 9d the previous year. Had fine weather prevailed during the carnival, the profit would have been considerably larger, it being evident that the carnival spirit prevailed, and residents and visitors were bent on pleasure and enjoyment. Out of the profit a sum of £3OO was allocated towards the cost of enlarging the supper room, and a contract for this work was let and the contractor is making good progress. It is hoped that the work will be completed and the hall ready for use towards the end of June. This improvement will provide greater seating capacity in the supper room and must prove of great use for all types of functions. The executive lias agreed that the balance of the amount required to complete the work, approximately £3OO, is to be met out of future carnival profits and until this obligation is met no further work in the way of improvements will be attempted, though a certain amount of small essential work will receive attention. Finances in Healthy Condition. The financial position of the Association is v in a very healthy condition, and as prospects for the future appear brighter, the coming carnival should result in better profit than last year. It is of interest to note that since its inception the Association has expended close on £II,OOO on improvements to the Bay and its surroundings and made donations of £ISOO to various causes. It is with deep regret that we have to record the loss by death of Mr T. R. Mackay, a past president and committeeman of the Association for many years. His" services were particularly valuable and his pleasant nature endeared him to all. His loss is keenly felt by members, and their sincere sympathy is extended to his wife and family in their bereavement. Numerous calls were made on the various games and equipment for many worthy causes during the year, and members have again generously devoted their time in conducting the games for these activities. A carnival at New Brighton was held early this year for relief purposes and a number of the games were utilised at this function. These were successfully run and added to the financial result of the function. Appreciation Expressed. The executive has again to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation to the large number of voluntary helpers who come forward each year and devote their time and energy in making the carnival an attraction for all. Their loyal support.and co-operation is the true community spirit and the executive keenly appreciates their generous action. The Bay caretaker (Mr A. F. Gibson) and his staff are also sincerely thanked for their ready support and assistance. To the members of the Timaru Municipal Junior and Pipe Bands, the best thanks of the executive are conveyed for their nightly attendance during the carnival and rendering appreciated musical programmes. The executive desires to record its appreciation of the excellent relations existing between the Mayor, Councillors and the Association, and to sincerely thank them for their continued interest and generous support. It is hoped that all interested in the Association will continue to give their ready assistance and co-operation, and that future functions will prove more successful than ever, and enable the Association to continue its good work by providing better facilities and attractions for residents and visitors, concluded the report.
