j KIRK-WINDEYER CUP CONTEST A SUGGESTION FROM AUSTRALIA By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. May 22. A suggestion is unofficially made from an Australian source that the next Kirk-Windeyer golf contest should be held during the Melbourne Centenary at Melbourne. It is mentioned that such large gatherings of golfers from all the Australian States will be present on that occasion that all States could participate in the contest, and that if New Zealand would agree this unique opportunity of testing the Australian golf standard with British and American visitors of note could be seized. The only difficulty of securing a New Zealand team apparently lies in the fact that the national championships are at Belmont early in October, and for the front rankers to attend both fixtures would entail heavy expense.

Tolley beat H. McMaster, 3 and 1. J. Wallace beat H. Chandler Egan (U.S.A.), 4 and 3. R. H. Wethered beat H. McGloin, jun., 5 and 4. J. Westland (U.S.A.) beat R. Harris at the 21st. William Breault beat H. Gibbs, 5 and 4. G. T. Dunlap (U.S.A.) beat G. P. P. Walsh at the 22nd. D. H. R. Martin beat M. R. Marston (U.S.A.), 2 and 1. A. J. Peech beat Vanarsdale, 4 and 3. E. W. Fiddian beat Stark, 4 and 3. T. A. Torrance beat D. S. Rutherford 2 and 1. E. A. Mcßuvie beat Liddell, 4 and 3. Dr. Carewmott beat J. Woollam at the 19th. Because of a chill contracted in the Walker Cup matches, the Hon. Michael Scott, holder of the title scratched from the tournament. The most amazing match was the victory of Dunlap, who played a dozen holes indifferently. His opponent, Walsh, a former champion of India and Oxford Blue, reached the comfortable position of dormie five and the gallery of 5000 expected the match to end at every hole. But Walsh had such and attack of nerves that ne missed a short putt for victory on neary every green, while Dunlap found the top of his form and played the last nine holes of the match in par figures. Moreland only just beat Ouimet, who was three up at the turn. Moreland’s round of 72 was the best of the day. Woollam never found normal form against Carewmott. The match was much hampered by the crowd. Woollam lost by taking three putts on the 22nd, after Carewmott had pitched dead from the bunker.
