“ANOTHER SQUEEZE." No. 4. (Written for “The Herald” by William Shackle). In to-day's example Z has bid to little slam in Diamonds after B had made an opening bid of 1 Spade. The hands were as follow's:
A opens with Spade 8, the highest of his partner’s suit. B after taking the first trick with Ace does not return his King of Spades, for if he did so it would make the Queen good in Dummy. As he does not like playing from his minor tenace of Clubs he decides to play a Heart The cards are then played as follows:
Another partial hand in which a squeeze must be used.
No Tumps. Z to lead and to make the remaining 7 tricks. When Z leads Diamond Jack, A would probably cover it, in which case the cards would fall thus:
B had to discard the 5 of Hearts or 10 of Spades. Naturally as his partner at that time held up the Heart he released the little Heart. A is in a hopeless position on the 4th round as if he plays a Heart it establishes Z’s Hearts, and if he plays Queen of Clubs he makes the Club 7 good in Dummy. Even if A did not cover the Diamond on the first round, the position would have been the same as the play would have been:
It all looks so simple when worked out on paper, but it must be realised that one can seldom be quite sure of the exact position of every card in actual play. Nevertheless, it is important to know how to squeeze when required for one is able to use it much more often than most players realise.
