HARRIER NEWS

(By “Marathon”)

PROGRAMME FOR 1934 SEASON The dates for the following races have been arranged by the Timaru Harrier Management Committee. June 9—The Norrie Cup race to be run at Waimate. June 23 —The Orr-Wallcer Cup race from Caroline Bay. July 14—Temuka-Timaru Road Race. July 14—Junior race about three miles, starting from Caroline Bay. July 28—Senior trial teams race at Washdyke, to select team for Canterbury Championship, July 28—Junior Cross Country Championship at Washdyke. (Distance approximately five miles.) Aug. 11—Canterbury open, and junior Cross Country Championship. Aug. 25—New Zealand Cross Country Championship at Dunedin. Sept. I—Waimate to Timaru Road Relay Race.

On Saturday last the combined Clubs were the guests of the Anglican Club at St. Mary’s Hall Church St. The runners showed appreciation of the hospitality of the Anglican Club by turning out in large numbers about sixty runners taking part in the run. The trail laid was a very long one about 10 miles, and for so early in the season was too big a task to ..se the juniors and new runners. The fault was possibly due to the fact that the trail-layers were lacking in their knowledge of the district they were running over, and misjudged the distance.

The latter part of the journey of two or three miles along the main south road would find the weak spots in most of the packs, and it was here most of the ‘easing up’ would take place. Trail layers should if possible select a course which they know well, and at this stage of the season limit the distance to about five or six miles.

In the fast pack. W. Taylor finished first, and set a good pace over most

of the journey; he was closely followed in by R. Holmes (Timaru) and L. Williams (Methodist). These two runners are showing promising form, and with strict attention to training they will make the closing stages of the Norrie Cup race very interesting. Harold Ward was also running well on Saturday but a mishap to his shoe held him back during the last part of the run. In the medium pack C. Langrish was first closely followed by G. Chiles and G. Gillon. In the slow pack the following were the placings: N. P. McCambridge (West End) 1, R. Taylor (Presbyterian) 2, R. Wilson (West End) 3.

The Course Committe appointed to report on the Orr-Walker Cup have now completed their work, and on Saturday measured the course. With one or two adjustments the course has been brought up to the required championship distance of 10,000 metres. The old course that was being used was about half or three quarters of a mile short of the required championship distance and this distance ha;

been made up over Grant’s property without altering the type of course to any extent. The Orr-Walker Cup Race is set down for June 23rd being two weeks after the Norrie Cup. This race will be run over the championship course as now selected. The race is an inter-club race for a handsome cup, and miniature cups for the winning team presented to the Timaru Harrier Management Committee by Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M. It is open to all Clubs affiliated with the Timaru Harrier Management Committee. The conditions of the race are for all Club members to run, and the first five of each Club to count for points the club winning the event to hold the Cup for one year. The Senior Individual Championship is run in conjunction with this race. The Orr-Walker Cup has been competed for since 1930. The first year it was won by the Methodist Club, and in 1931-32-33 it has been won by the Timaru Club. Timaru Application Refused. The Canterbury Harrier sub-commit-tee at its meeting last week considered the application of the Timaru Harrier Management Committee to hold the Canterbury Cross Country Championship race in Timaru this season, but as stated above the application was refused. This matter has still to come before the Canterbury Centre, but the Centre will no doubt be guided in this matter by the decision of the Harrier Sub-committee. The officials and supporters of cross country running in Timaru know what a boost the sport would get in South Canterbury if the Canterbury Cross Country Championship was held in Timaru. Timaru is justly entitled to consideration in this respect. They have sent teams to Christchurch for this event since 1926, and have always assisted with finance toward the expense of sending the Canterbury team to the Dominion Championships. When the field in the Canterbury Championships was comparatively small the Timaru team was very welcome, and further with the attraction of the TemukaTimaru Road Race added interest was given to Harriers in Christchurch. It is not too late for the Harrier Subcommittee, and the Canterbury Centre to reconsider favourably Timaru’s application and assist very materially the harrier sport in South Canterbury Canterbury by allotting the Cross Country Championship to Timaru for 1934. It was reported in last week's notes that the West End Club were holding a combined training night with the Methodist Club. This is incorrect; it is the Presbyterian Club who have arranged the combined training night with the West End Club. Some very promising junior runners are to be seen out with the different clubs. In view of the fact that the Canterbury Centre are holding a junior Cross Country Championship it would be advisable to get a junior team together for training purposes.
