THE LOTTERIES ACT
INFRINGEMENT BY BAKER. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, May 18. Money in cake may constitute a lottery in New Zealand, according to a decision at the Magistrate’s Court today, when Hollis William Read, was charged with establishing a lottery. A firm of cake manufacturers recently circularised their agents notifying them that over 1500 silver pieces were to be placed in their cake. A detective made inquiries and in one piece in a shop window, he saw 14 threepenny pieces. He went inside and purchased a small piece for 4d, and in it was one threepenny piece. Counsel for the defendant, who pleaded guilty, said that the offence was technical and'venial. The scheme was a means of advertising and was perfectly genuine, but a rival of the firm must have complained to the police. The Magistrate fined the defendant £2 and costs.
