CHANGE OF NAVAL POLICY

AMERICA WITHDRAWS FROM EAST

CLOSING UP OF “SUICIDE BASES” United Press Association —By Electric Tel egraph—Copyright (Received May 16, 7.0 p.m.) LONDON, May 16. The naval correspondent of “The Daily Telegraph,” says that the United States, acting on the advice ol experts, is contemplating the evacuation of all fleet bases in the Far Eastern watei-s, and the withdrawal of the Asiatic Squadron, which is now in the Philippines Islands. The latter move is linked with the forthcoming granting of independence to the Philippines. The naval experts for many years have emphasised the grave risks incurred in retaining the Islands, that could not be defended in the case of a war with Japan, and the inevitable loss in the initial stage of a campaign woxxld constitute a moral reverse of the first magnitude. The Philippine squadron has long been known as the “live bait” squadron, or the “suicide fleet.”
