“THE ONLY FREE LIBRARY”
DUNEDIN STATEMENT CORRECTED.
Exception to the remarks contained in a Press Association message from Dunedin yesterday, which stated that the Dunedin Public Library was the only free library in New Zealand, was taken by Miss M. E. Culverweli, librarian of Timaru Public Library, who told a reporter of “The Timaru Herald,” that the statement had been apparently made without due consideration, as the Dunedin Public Library was not the only free library in the Dominion. “Perhaps,” said Miss Culverweli, “sufficient answer will be forthcoming if I quote the following remarks published in ‘The Dunedin Star,’ in an interview with Mr R. Munn, representative of the Carnegie Corporation and director of the Pittsburg Carnegie Library: ‘The Dunedin and the Timaru Public Libraries stand as splendid overseas oases in a desert of subscription libraries.’ ”
