FALSE STATEMENT
RELIEF WORKER CONVICTED. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. May 16. Mr A. P. Lawry, S.M., to-day convicted and discharged a man charged with obtaining money from the Unemployment Board by means of a false statement, and reiterated his criticism of the Board expressed on April 18, in demanding full restitution from men who had been convicted, irrespective of the amount of restitution fixed by the Court. Mr Lawry refused to allow the Labour Department to withdraw the ease, the hearing of which had been adjourned, saying “So that the Board won’t be able to treat this as a case with which the Court has not dealt, I will convict and discharge the man. If it had not been for the trouble that arose before, I would have ordered this man to pay £ls in restitution, but the Board has lost that by its attitude.”
