INSPECTION OF SCHOOLS
TRIBUTE TO WORK OF COMMITTEES.
An inspection of more than 100 schools in South Canterbury between Timaru and Kurow has Just been completed by the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr W. P. Spencer), and the two representatives of the south ward, Messrs G. W. Armitage and Stanley Smith. The inspection is a part of the general inspection which is being made by members of the board throughout Canterbury, and is the first which has been made for five years. • Mr Spencer, who returned to Christchurch on Tuesday, said the schools were being visited to gain first-hand knowledge of the condition of the buildings and playgrounds. In almost every district the school committees had been interviewed, and the board members had been greatly impressed with the enthusiasm and interest which they showed in their schools. Many committees, realising the board’s financial problems, had done a great deal of very useful work at their own expense. Generally speaking the schools were found to be in good order, and really excellent work had been done by the various committees to improve playgrounds. At many schools the playgrounds were in fine order, and their excellence had particularly impressed the board members.
Mr Spencer said that a detailed report on the inspection would be presented to the board, probably in about a month. Commencing on May 23, he and other members of the board would inspect schools in the Ashburton and Geraldine districts, the work occupying eight days. At present, Mr R. Wild and Mr J. Hurley were inspecting the North Canterbury schools.
