PAREORA. At the May meeting of the Pareora Women’s Institute, the president. Mrs M. Hoskins presided over a fair attendance. The roll call was "What I would like to be shown at the Institute.” A most interesting travel talk was given by Miss Lovell-Smith. The competitions resulted as follows: Article from two ounces of wool—Mrs N. Hoskins and Miss C. Smallridge equal 1, Mrs Hoskins second. Rag mat —Mrs A. Hanson 1, Mesdames Wallace and Richards and Miss Mavis Munro equal 2. Specimen bloom—Mrs Whitticase 1, Miss Lorna Coote 2. Bowl of Flowers—Mrs Anderson 1, Mrs Whitticase 2, Mrs Richards 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. CAVE. At the May meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute there was a fair attendance of members. Miss Amves presided. Members were reminded of the show to be held in Timaru in June and were asked to send in as many entries as possible. The president stated that the dance which was held the previous month had been a success and the Institute funds were considerably augumented by it. A very comprehensive report of the half yearly federation meeting was given by Mrs D. Ker and a vote .if thanks was passed to her. Various points on knitting and a demonstration of knitting stitches were given by Mrs Brown and Mrs D. Ker and both were accorded a vote of thanks. During the afternoon Mrs Rich gave a short talk about Red Cross work and asked for more members to join up and volunteers to make up garments to be forwarded to the depot. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses after which Mrs Gunn gave a short gramophone recital. The winners of the competitions were:—Preserved fruit: Miss Wiseby 1, Mrs Malthus 2, Mrs Brown and Mrs Lawrie equal 3. Preserved leaves: Miss Weavers 1, Mrs Malthus 2, Mrs Brown 3. Chrysanthemums: Miss Weavers 1, Miss M. Robinson 2, and Mrs Moses 3. ST. ANDREW S. At the monthly meeting of St. Andrew's Women’s Institute Mrs W. Mills presided over a good attendance cf members and visitors. Members were asked to prepare exhibits for the exhibition to be held in Timaru in June. The picnic which was postponed whl take the form of a gift afternoon later in the year, proceeds to help the coal and blanket fund. Mrs Hewson, Esk Valley, demonstrat- ! ed how to turn the heel of a sock. Miss ' Midgley gave a talk on home dyeing ] and Miss Madge Kane read several | extracts from Charles Lamb. Mrs Bell ! read a report on the Federation meet- j ing held in Geraldine. The competitions resulted: Bowl of I chrysanthemums: Mrs C. H. S. Johnston 1 and 2. Specimen bloom, Mrs Bennett 1, Miss Arden 2, The hostesses were: Mesdames Bell and Cook, Misses Russell, Coles and Bishop.
