Fatal rioting occurred during the Moslems’ Muharram observance at Sultanpur in Kaparthala. The Moslems defied the police warning that the procession was not to traverse a street in which three Hindu temples are situated. They attacked the police guarding the road. The latter fired, killing and seriously wounding over thirty. The crowd then dispersed. British and Indian troops were called out at Benares to assist the police to maintain order. Hundreds of Moslems at Lahore, injured themselves with knives, beat their bodies with heavy chains, and set alight their clothing in an excess of religious fervour. A grave situation is developing in Bombay, where fierce fighting between the cotton mill strikers and the police, followed the former’s defiance of orders banning meetings and demonstrations. After the police had been attacked for over an hour, with stones and bottles, tiqey repeatedly made baton charges, and dispersed the rioters. Many on both sides were injured. The strikers now number 60,000.
