TIMARU FIRE BOARD

ANNUAL MEETING HELD MR WM. C. RAYMOND RE-ELECTED The Timaru Fire Board met cn Tuesday. Present: Messrs Wm. C. Raymond, J. Hole, W. H. Hall, C. S. Young and J. Davis. Correspondence dealing with Fire Prevention Week was received from the Department of Internal Affairs. Mr Hall said that the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) had been ke’en for the brigade to stage a mock fire to create interest in Fire Prevention Week, but the Superintendent was not impresed with the proposal. . Mr Davis said that in Christchurch the engines had been taken round the schools, where short demonstrations had been given. In addition, Superintendent Warner had given short talks over the wireless. Mr Hall added that another suggestion had been for a short talk and film to be given at one of the theatres but that idea also had been abandoned. "Judging by our fire loss here, there is not much need for a demonstration.” As Fire Prevention Week was passed the matter was not pursued. The superintendent (Mr P. Campbell) reported that since last meeting of the Board the brigade had responded to nine alarms of fire, one of which was false. None of the outbreaks had been serious, and owing to the brigade receiving early calls the fires had been caught in their incipient stages. The report was adopted. A deputation from the brigade waited on the Board to discuss telephone rentals and the matter was held over for investigation. Estimates involving a total expenditure of £2663/6/11 were approved. Annual Meeting^ At the annual meeting of the Board held subsequently, the chairman thanked members for their services. The brigade had done its work well, and although some of it had been criticised, he was sure it had all been done to the satisfaction of the Board. He concluded by extending thanks to the Superintendent and. members of the brigade for their services and cooperation during the year. Mr Raymond was unanimously reelected chairman, and Mr Hole was re-elected vice-chairman. Ir. his annual report, the superintendent stated that to March 31, 1934, the brigade had answered 39 calls. The fires attended were as follows: 12 chimney fires, 2 motor cycles, 1 motor lorry, 6 dwellings, 3 motor garages, 1 washhouse, 2 engineers’ shops, 1 motor and carriage factory, 1 workshop, 1 flour mill, l hotel, 1 boardinghouse, 1 dairy factory, 1 electric cable fire, 3 rubbish and grass fires and 2 false alarms. The most serious fire occurred on October 17, 1933, at A. G. Knowles’, motor factory, but by getting away early the brigade had made a good save. The plant was in fairly good order. The Superintendent tendered his thanks to the Board, and to officers and men of the Police Force. The report was adopted.
