STRIKE RIOTS IN CALCUTTA
SERIOUS CLASHES WITH POLICE OPEN DEFIANCE OP LAW AND ORDER United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 25, 6.30 p.m.) CALCUTTA, April 24. The strike position took an ugly turn to-day, when 18 more mills closed, rendering 30,000 workers idle. Operatives defied the police ban on demonstrations, the crowds attacking loyal workers and stoning the mills. Thirteen Labour leaders were arrested, including Miss Maniben Kara. There have been frequent clashes between the police and strikers, the latter being dispersed by baton charges. Scores of strikers were arrested. General Strike Attempted. An attempt to organise a general Btrike in India in sympathy with the Bombay mill workers, failed, as today’s stoppage was confined to 10 per cent of 250,000 cotton mill employees in the Bombay Province. Large forces of armed police are stationed in the affected area.
