CONVICTION ENTERED
ILLEGAL WRESTLING BOUT By Telegraph—Press Association HAMILTON, April 23. Following on a recent case in which two showmen were convicted for promoting an illegal wrestling contest at the Ngaruawahia regatta, Anthony Howley, a young half-caste Maori, appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, charged with engaging in a wrestling bout without a permit. He pleaded not guilty. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson stated that the proprietors of a sideshow invited members of the public to enter the tent to wrestle one of the employees. Howley accepted the challenge and engaged in a two-minute wrestling bout. There were no falls, the bout resulting in a draw. Howley admitted engaging in the bout, but added that he was under the impression that he would get some money if he won. He did not know that wrestling was illegal. He received no payment whatever. He had wrestled before in gymnasiums in Auckland, but never at sideshows. Defendant was convicted and discharged.
