At Formby, Rex Hartley and William Sutton, a former title holder, were surprisingly beaten in the first round of the English amateur close golf championship. The holder, John Woollam. was taken to the nineteenth hole by J. Wood, a local player with a five handicap. Others defeated include Hardman, a former Walker Cup player, and Waddington, an old Yorkshire cricketer.
