SOUTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The opinion that the prospects for the coming season were brighter than lor some years was expressed by the chairman, Mr A. W. Stead, at the weekly meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Hockey Association on Monday. It was practically certain that at least five men’s, and probably seven women’s teams would be entering the competition this year, with the possibility of more teams entering later. In extending a welcome to Mr L. Hasell, a newcomer to Timaru from Wanganui, M” Stead said that he would be a decided acquisition to the game in South Canterbury. A hockey enthusiast since his school days, he had been instrumental in forming hockey clubs in Christchurch and Wanganui and had been an A. grade referee in the latter city for six or seven years. He expressed the hope that Mr Hasell would remain in Timaru and carry the whistle for many years to come. A protest against the committee’s proposal to alter the rule, that “nonplayers only are eligible for election” to “players are eligible for election.” was received from the South End Club, and it was decided to hold a special meeting of delegates on May 7 to discuss the question of alteration of rules. Mr M. J. Angland, secretary of the South Canterbury Cricket Association, wrote asking the Association’s support in the formation of a South Canterbury Athletic Clubs’ Protection Association similar to those already in existence in Dunedin and Christchurch. After general discussion, it was decided that as such an organisation would bo of great benefit to the Association. to support the request Messrs Stead and W. Garland were appointed delegates to attend a meeting of representatives of all amateur sports’ bodies for the purpose of forming such an association, to be held on April 24, It was decided to purchase one set of posts and nets, and to recondition another set in the meantime. An Emergency Committee of Messrs Stead, V. Hahn and D. Unwin was appointed. Permission was granted the following teams to play matches at Russell Square on Saturday:— Rata v. Wesley, at 2 p.m. Stafford v. Albury, rt. 3 p.m. A letter was received from Mrs W Woodward, Russell Square, offering the use of a rcom*for dressing purposes throughout the season. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of appreciation to Mrs Woodward. and accepting her generous offer.
