GERALDINE

USE OF RELIEF LABOUR POSITION EXPLAINED BY COUNTY CHAIRMAN Before submitting a report by the County Engineer (Mr C. E. Bremner) showing development and reproductive work carried out during the period June 30, 1933 (approximately) to March 9, 1934, with assistance from the Unemployment Fund, the chairman (Mr K. Mackenzie) remarked to the Geraldine County Council, at its meeting yesterday, that there had been criticism that the Council was using the services of the unemployed for carrying out ordinary county work. However, such was not the case, as the ordinary work of the county was being done in the usual way. The work on which the unemployed were engaged was work which the county would not normally undertake. The county engineer (Mr C. E. Bremner) remarked that in any case work done by the unemployed was approved by the Temuka Unemployment Committee.

The engineer’s report showed that in the Geraldine riding work done with the assistance of the Unemployment Board had been as follows:—Roads (including highways), 51 chains; widening, 32 chains; metalling, 2900 cubic yards; footpaths, 30 chains; road fencing, 21 miles; land improvements and developments, stumping and logging, 2 acres; scrub clearing, broom, etc. 104 acres; willow clearing, widening and cleaning, 3 miles 4 chains; drain cleaning, creek widening, etc., 201 miles; land drain cleaning, cutting, etc., 2 miles; river improvements, willow clearing, 5 miles; river protective works, 2 1-8 miles; netted gabion work, 7J chains; fencing embankments, 2 miles. Other works consisted of concrete pipe making, pile driving, bridge building, laying pipe culverts, stripping quarry and bridge painting. Temuka riding—Roads (including highways), new road formation, widening and metalling, nil; footpaths, 30 chains; road fencing, 14 miles; land improvements and development, stumping and logging, 2 acres; scrub cutting, gorse and broom, 44 acres; willow clearing, widening, and clearing, 3 miles; drain cutting, Clandeboye Settlement, 12 miles; road drain and creek cleaning, widening, etc., 162 miles; river improvements, willow clearing, 5 miles; river protective works, 1 mile 5 chains; boulder netted gabions, 7 chains; fencing embankments, 2 miles; concrete pipe making. The report was adopted.

IMPROVING SCHOOL FOOTPATH.

The chairman (Canon J. F. Coursey) and Mr L. C. Simmonds, of the Geraldine District High School Committee, waited on the Geraldine County Council yesterday to urge that the footpath from the secondary school to the Wilson Street bridge should be shingled. Mr Coursey stated that during the work at the school the footpath along the school property had been formed, but it had since become overgrown with weed.:. With the approach of winter the path would be very muddy, and there was a fair amount of traffic to and fro. As originally proposed at the School Committee meeting, an asphalt path had been suggested, but the committee had felt that the County Council would not agree owing to its proximity to the river. The committee merely asked for a path which he did not think would cost very much. Mr Simmonds, who endorsed Mr Coursey’s statement, remarked that several residents had spoken of the matter to him, and he had been the means of bringing it before the committee. The matter was referred to the county engineer. PERSONAL. Miss Winifred Haskins (Raukapuka) left yesterday for Dunedin, where she will resume training at the Public Hospital. Miss Joan McKechnie has returned to Oamaru. Mrs L. P. Scott (Raukapuka) has returned from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mrs C. McDonald (Orari Bridge), who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned home. Miss K. Wilson (Christchurch) is spending a holiday in Geraldine. Misses N. Maxwell (Kakahu) and R. Moyle (Geraldine), and Messrs A. Smith and J. and R. Moyle (Geraldine) are on a motor tour of the Southern Lakes. Mr and Mrs A. Riddiford (Greymouth), who have been visiting their daughter, Mrs J. Tiplady (Geraldine), for the past three months, will return to the West Coast at the end of the week. Mrs A. Whiting, Mrs Shafer, Miss Dando and Messrs C. and A. Shafer (West Coast), and Mrs Murdoch (Christchurch) are the guests of Mrs J. Tiplady, Geraldine. Mrs T. J. Beck is the guest of Mrs T. J. Paterson, Cox Street. The Geraldine dairymen advertise that from the first of the month the price of milk will be increased by one penny per quart. The Boys’ Welfare Committee advertises that a lad (18), with 2* years’ previous experience, requires farm work, and that a lad (16) wants work in the Orari or Pleasant Valley districts. The Orari Bridge Hall Committee will commence the fortnightly euchre parties to-morrow night, and will continue to hold these every sale night. Record entries have been received for the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association’s annual show,, which will be held at Winchester on Thursday next. The light horse section will again prove a strong attraction, and this year there will be an extraordinary exhibit of field roots, both in regard to the number of entries and their quality. A rabbit section will be a new feature at this year’s show. The business people of Geraldine have agreed to close their premises at 11 a.m. on show day.
