FIFTY YEARS AS SEXTON
1 WOMAN CLAIMS RECORD. Miss Jane Blake, of Emery Down, a ' little English village has been sexton | and parish clerk for more than fifty i years. | She claims to have established a I record. She and her father, who lived to be ninety-two, have occupied these positions ever since the church was opened. Between them they have seen six clergymen fill the vicarate. Her work for the church is the ruling passion of her life, and despite the fact that Miss Blake is nearing her seventy-fifth year she goes to church ' every Sunday and feast day to toll the • bell. : “I don’t think that the young people 1 of to-day are any worse than we were ; because they don’t attend church on Sunday, but I should like to see more youngsters attending divine service,” she said. Miss Blake is also caretaker of the church. She and her father have been sexton and parish clerk between them since 1864. There is a memorial in the church to Mr Moses Blake, marking his long service.
