WAIMATE

SHOWERY WEATHER HARVEST INTERRUPTED After a spell of ideal harvestingweather, the last two days have been dull and overcast in the Waimate district, with light intermittent showers. For the 24 hours ended 9.30 a.m. yesterday, 3 points of rain were registered at the Waimate observatory, and about a similar fall was experienced yesterday afternoon. About a week’s fine weather would see the conclusion of harvesting operations in the district. SHEEP MOVING. Great activity has been experienced in Waimate in the sheep market during the last fortnight, and not for several years have so many mobs been seen on the roads. Practically in all directions throughout thee County it is impossible to travel without encountering mobs varying in size 100 up to 1,000, mostly travelling towards the main trunk road, but in many instances indications point to farmers with the necessary feed having purchased ewes with a view to next season’s lambing. RUGBY The annual meeting of the Southern Football Club was held on Monday evening, when Mr W. E. Black presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual report stated that last season the teams had played well and the seniors had won the knock-out competition. Congratulations were doe to those players who had gained representative honours during the season. The club regretted to record the loss of the valued services of Messrs G. W. Brown, V. M. Horn and T. Hobbs who had left the district. The report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a satisfactory credit, were adopted. The election of officers resulted: Patrons, Hon. J. Bltchener and Mr J. W. Halliday; president, Mr D. Shaw; club captain, Mr W. E. Black; vicecaptain, Mr A. Williams; secretary, Mr G. R. Geddes; treasurer, Mr R. Brien; committee, Messrs W. Deady, O. and E. Veitch and M. Ward; delegates to SubUnion, Messrs Black and Williams; trustees, Messrs Brien and Shaw. The subscriptions were left the same as last year. The following new members were elected: Messrs A. Ames, L. Hunt, J. Tamblyn, Trott, Sullivan, Watts, Allington, K. Stevens, S. Wasley. GYMNKHANA COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Hook Gymnkhana Committee was held on Monday night when the chairman (Mr H. Rathgen) reported that a meeting of the ladies had been held and Mesdames Mackenzie, Bumess and Mason had been appointed to take charge of the sweets and soft drinks stall, while Mrs Rathgen was appointed to take charge of the bran tub. He also reported that Mr D. Campbell had offered to lend wethers for the dog trials. The secretary intimated that buses had been engaged to run from Waimate and Timaru, and also that he had Insured spectators against Injury. Mr H. H. Meyer stated that he would give the Hook Cup for draughts, and other prizes to the value of £3O were allotted for the various events. Mr Meyer also undertook to procure the pig for the greasy pig event. It was reported that arrangements had been completed for the dance, and it was decided to erect a marquee alongside the hall for the holding of games at night.
