LABOUR CAMPAIGN
MR SEMPLE AT NAPIER. By Telegraph—Press Association NAPIER. March 27. Taking “Labour Prosperity Plans” as his title, Mr R. Semple, M.P. addressed an audience of 400 persons to-night. Describing present conditions Mr Semple said that it was a man made calamity engineered by a group of individuals who had taken advantage of the rest of the people. He gave examples of improvements to machinery which were continually displacing men. Though this power driven age would produce mountains of wealth, he said millions would starve. Though the problem of wealth production had been solved, the problem of its distribution was far from being solved. Man must answer the money problem which was responsible for the trouble today. The banks held in the hollow of their hands the desti / of nations. The present Coalition C /ernment had done everything on t\e advice of bankers and was pursuing a policy of reckless deflation to raise the price cf money to the detriment of the country. When there was control of currency, he said, the Labour Party would pin currency to the commodity index, and issue money according to the wealth created. This volume of money would be measured and under such a system money could be called a method of distribution by a scientific system of taxation. The hoarding of money would be prevented beyond something to live upon in the late days of one’s life.
