A new system of street lighting was tried out in Stafford Street last night. The new lamps, of which there are nine, are on loan to the Borough Council. In all they produce 16,000 candle power, as compared with 4,000 candlepower produced by the 12 fittings previously in use. The peculiar colour effect of the new lights immediately attracts attention, being between blue and purple. The new lamps are being used fairly extensively on many main highways in England, apparently with success. The light is distributed on the gaseous discharge system and bears little similarity to the method generally known. Three types are being tested. One is for use in bracket or pole mounting only and throws a directional beam along the roadway. The amount of light thrown across the road is restricted because it is not desired to waste light. The second type is constructed on the same principle but has not the same restrictions for fitting. The third type is suitable only for suspension over the centre of the roadway and has no directional function.
