In spite of the desperate nature of the oposition manifested and his condition, the constable gave chase, but the men got away under the bridge and eluded him. A party of 20 Mokau residents was organised by Constable Powell and in the darkness the scrub around the river was scoured. Constable Powell and Messrs Taylor and Northern located the pair, but the men gave the three searchers a go for it before they would submit. Finally the men were taken into custody.
