FAIRLIE

NEXT WEEK’S SHOW RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES Entries for the Mackenzie County Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Highland Show at Fairlie on Easter Monday closed on Saturday and the total number of entries received constituted a record of 2384, an increase of 311 over last year’s record total of 2073. This year’s entries exceed those for the 1931 fixture by 400. The Mackenzie Show is recognised as one of the leading exhibitions of stock in the South Island and this year’s fixture promises to exceed those of preceding years, not only in the number of entries, but also in the quality of the stock exhibited. The Clydesdale Horse section is always one of the main attractions and strong entries have been received from leading exhibitors this year. The sheep sections ar also numerically strong, 358 entries having been received in the cattle sections. The light horse section and hunters trials will prove to be a source of attraction for the public, while one of the most interesting features will be the competition for the Robert Leach Memorial Cup. FLOCK EWE COMPETITION. The flock ewe competition under the auspices of the Mackenzie A. and P. Association was held on Saturday. The judges were Messrs W. R. Fraser, Robt. Graham and John Waddell. Dr Woodhouse, president of the Timaru A. and P. Asociation was an interested visitor. The awards were:— Andrew Grant 1 E. Robinson 2 Mrs M. C. Wills 3 Also competed: F. M. Larcomb, R. A. Grant, T. B. Crampton and I. Collins. The same number of entries was received as last year. The judges commented very favourably on all of the stock, and congratulated the compecitors on their public spiritedness and loyalty to the Association in makingentries. The flocks were shown in excellent condition and it was not an easy task to allot the prizes. Vfery few points separated all the entries. The entries were not as numerous as could be expected from such an extensive and suitable area for rearing fine sheep and it would be to the advantage of the district as a whole and the farmers generally to have more competition.

KIMBELL WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The third annual meeting of the Kimbell Women’s Institute was held in the schoolroom, when Mrs Keenan presided over a good attendance of members. Three new members—Misses Waters, Capil and Mason were enrolled. Mrs Fee and Miss Fraser were appointed to attend the half-yearly conference at Geraldine. The annual report and balancesheet showed that the year had been a successful one, with a very satisfactory credit balance. All who had helped during the year were thanked by the president. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs Keenan; vice-president, Mrs Fee; secretary, Miss H. Fraser; committee, Mesdames Brien, Fraser, Ireland and Sadler. During the afternoon, Miss Pyne gave an interesting travel talk on Vancouver Island. Mrs Ross won both competitions for pastry and collection of flowers.
