BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS An ordinary meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), Councillors G. Benstead, J. R. Hart, W. G. Tweedy, W. H. Hall, H. J. Mathers, P. B. Foote, F. B. Hawkey and P. C. Vinnell. Electricity and Omnibus Committee. The Electricity and Omnibus Committee recommended that the Council join the New Zealand Municipal Electric Supply Association; that school concession tickets be not available at night, and that the omnibus service be extended to the showgrounds during the Easter holidays. The report was adopted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee recommended that the Salvation Army be granted the use of the Bay Hall on August 5, the Band rotunda on April 1, and that the Mayor and Council attend a welcome to the Greymouth Band on Good Friday or April 1; that the penalty date on rates be extended till March 31; that in regard to Gould’s stables in Heaton Street that the solicitors be instructed to inform the lessees that the sub-lessee must vacate the premises; that owing to tlie resignation of Miss Raines, Mr C. Cook be placed on the work undertaken by Miss Raines, and that Mr D. Hall be permanently appointed as cadet. The report was adopted. Works Committee. The Works Committee reported in regard to the public telephone at the Bank of New Zealand that the telegraph engineer advised that the cabinet was best situated in its present position. It recommended that the kerbing and channelling of Mill Street be carried out; also asphalt work at the Timaru Main School. Referring to the application for asphalt work at the Main School, Cr. Tweedy contended that the Council should not enter into competition with ratepayers who were in the particular line of business, and who were prepared to do the work. Recently similar work had been done at another school, and he did not wish it to be thought that his remarks applied to the Main School only. The unemployment problem was acute, and it would never be solved until men were got back into normal avenues of work. Cr. Vinnell supported Cr. Tweedy, and said that although he had supported the application of the Waimataitai School, on reflection, he felt that they had acted wrongly. Cr. Tweedy moved as an amendment, that the Main School be advised that the Council regretted that it could not undertake the work. The amendment was seconded by Cr. Foote. Cr. Benstead said that he was in an awkward position, and felt that he ought to leave his chair. The principle probably was correct, but there were extenuating circumstances so fas as school committees were concerned. The amendment was carried by six votes to three.
