A SOUND POSITION FOOTBALL CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Fairlie Football Club was held in the Aorangi Hall, Mr F. Geaney presiding over a good attendance of members and supporters. Report and Balance-Sheet. The secretary, Mr A. Forrester, read the annual report and balance-sheet. The report showed the club to have had a successful year. The senior team, although not winning the championship, performed with credit, and was successful in winning the Scott Cup. The junior team played well, and tied for the premiership, but was defeated in the play-off. Congratulations were extended to the Aorangi Club on winning both competitions. Thanks were due to the coaches—Mr P. Keenan (senior) and Mr W. Brown (junior) for their work in the teams’ Interest. The following players gained representative honours in the SubUnion—G. Giddings, L. Stevenson, D. O’Reilly, F. Black, E. Black, J. Keenan, A. Crampton, G. Breen, T. Creighton and P. Keenan. G. Giddings again represented South Canterbury for the sixth season. Special thanks were due to the lady supporters for assistance at the social functions, and to supporters for donations, and to Mrs Surridge for the donation of a ham. Thanks were due to the president, secretary and treasurer (Mr Bourn), and to the delegates to the Sub-Union (Messrs W. G. Black, J. O’Connor and F. Geaney), and to the committee for their , work during the year. The annual dance had proved a great success, and thanks were expressed to all who had assisted and to the public for their support. During the playing season, players had been granted the use of the baths at the Gladstone and Fairlie Hotels through the foresight of Mr W. Scott, and thanks were due to him and to Mrs Thistleton and Mrs Manaton. This arrangement had proved a great boon to players. The balance-sheet showed the club's finances to be in a sound position. The credit for the year was £ls/4/5, making a total*of £45/8/2. The insurance fund showed a credit of £27/19/-. Medical fees of £B/7/- had been paid out during the year. The fund showed a debit of £l/6/- on the year’s working. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president expressed pleasure at the splendid position of the club, and congratulated the secretary on the club’s sound financial position. The motion was seconded by Mr T. Creighton and carried. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted:— Patrons, Messrs C. J. Talbot and Andrew Grant; president, Mr F. Geaney; vice-presidents, as last year, with the addition of Rev. Father Gallagher and Mr J. Dick; treasurer, Mr W. L. Bourn; hon. secretary, Mr L. Stevenson; captain, Mr G. Giddings; vicecaptain, Mr Jack Keenan; committee, Messrs W. G. Black, A. Forrester, T. B. Crampton, J. P. Cunneen, R. J. Creighton, C. D. Gilling, D. O’Rqilly, and T. Hill; delegates to Sub-Union, Messrs J. O'Connor, W. G. Black and F. Geaney; selector, Mr P. Keenan; coach, Mr P. Keenan; junior coach, Mr W. Bourn; insurance committee, Messrs F. Geaney, W. Bourn, L. Stevenson, and captains of teams. General. The subscriptions were fixed as follows:—Senior 3/-, junior 2/-. It was decided that owing to the Zingari Club having a fixture for Easter Saturday, games be arranged with. the Zingari and Temuka Clubs after Easter. Four new members—Messrs lan Murchison, L. Boacheray, T. Connolly and G. Moran—were elected. Mr Geaney made reference to the work done for the club by the secretary, Mr A. Forrester, during the last five years. Mr Forrester had been an ideal secretary, and the sound position of the club reflected credit on his work, and he regretted Mr Forrester had resigned. Other members also spoke of Mr Forrester’s good work. On the motion of Mr Geaney, the sum of £3/3/- was granted to Mr Forrester, and it was decided that appreciative reference to Mr Forrester’s work as secretary be recorded in the minutes.
ALLANDALE INSTITUTE. Mrs J. O’Neill presided over the first annual meeting of the Allandale Women’s Institute, which was largely attended. Mrs O’Neill congratulated the members on having such a successful year. Meetings had proved very enjoyable, interesting and instructive, thanks to many demonstrators and speakers who had so willingly given of their time and knowledge. Thanks were also due to the outgoing committee and also the Press. The treasurer (Mrs R. Sadler) submitted a comprehensive balance sheet which showed a very satisfactory credit balance. Miss Mary O’Reilly, as secretary of the Basket Ball Club, gave an outline of the team’s activities during the season. Delegates chosen to attend the South Canterbury Federation ' meeting to be held In Geraldine were Mesdames Scarlett and J. Hall. It was decided to make a contribution to the school library in appreciation of the Committee allowing the use of the school for meetings. The result of the ballot for the new committee was as follows: Mrs Ralph Wareing, President; Mrs T. Crampton, vice-president; Mrs A. Hall, hon. secretary; Mrs F. Crampton, treasurer; Mesdames J. O’Neill, W. Mc< onnell, Scarlett, J. Hall and Misses Isitt and Brice, committee. An Irish half-hour formed the social part of the afternoon. Miss Monica O’Reilly danced an Irish jig, Miss Brice read an Irish poem, and a roll call on Irish wit was much enjoyed. Cheers and musical honours wre given for Mrs O’Neill, -*nd Mrs McKay presented her with a bouquet of asters and roses tied with the Institute’s coloured ribbons. Mrs O’Neill then welcomed Mrs Wareing as the new President, and presented er with a bouquet of marigolds tied with the Institute ribbons. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting then closed by the singing of the National Anthem.
FAIRLIE INSTITUTE. The singing of the Institute Song opened the annual meeting of the Fairlie Women’s Institute. To a good attendance of members, Mrs West, the President, read the annual report, showing that during a successful year Interesting demonstrations on barbola, cake icing, lampshades, beaded mocassins, gloves and tatting had been given by our members. Talks had been given on Portuguese East Africa, the erV;- history of
the Mackenzie Country, North West Australia, Perth and the Franz Josef. The “Bring and Buy Table” reported steady business throughout the year. Recently the Institute had affiliated with the Drama League through the Federation and a circle was formed with Mrs Barnes as promoter. Most points had been s'cured at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Timaru by the Institute. A balance sheet was submitted by the treasurer, and on the motion of the president, the report and balance sheet were adopted. Various members spoke In appreciation of Mrs West’s work, and sincerely hoped that she would continue to take a keen interest in the Institute. The election of officers resulted as follow:—President, Miss Foden; committee, Mesdames R. Gillingham, Braddick, May, Roberts, Barnes, McDowell, Loughnan, Latimer and A Loomes, Misses Rodgers, Orr and W. Dick. Two delegates were appointed to attend Federation, Mrs A. Gillingham and Miss Foden. A short play written by Mrs Goulter, entitled “Room 19,” performed by members of the Drama Circle, was much appreciated. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Carter, Carlton, Allan. R. Gillingham, Guinnessy, Everest, Searle and Misses
